June Foraging Walks: Upcoming Group Events

Summer is officially here and I could not be more excited! So many incredible wild edibles and herbs are at their prime right now – asparagus, mugwort, black locust flowers, grape leaves and tendrils, reishi mushrooms, hops shoots, pepper grasses, beach roses, solomon’s seal, cattails, and a plethora of succulent, salty delights along the coast.

Just yesterday, I found my first three chicken of the woods mushrooms in a little under an hour. With the warmer weather and recent rain storms, plants, fungi and flowers continue to be about 2 weeks ahead of their normal schedule, so be sure to get out there and check your spots!

May was busy with numerous public group forages, private classes and my first corporate forage of the season with an incredibly fun group of employees from the WPS Institute, a non profit here in Newton, MA.

June starts the foraging migration, when we move out of open fields and begin focusing on hedgerows, wood edges, salt marshes and forest edibles. My public events this month offer a number of different foraging experiences. Celebrate pride month by joining me on a group forage followed by a social hour featuring wild crafted sodas, meads, cocktails and mocktails. Come on a mushroom hunt and learn about the edible and poisonous fungi that grow locally. Or, go big and register for my newest offering – forage AND feast. This event will be offered monthly and includes an hour and a half forage, followed by a specially prepared wild food picnic that includes drinks, appetizers, soup/salad, and main course.

Can’t make any of the dates below? Interested in booking a private family forage, wild food picnic with friends, or corporate team building day for your employees? Just shoot me an email!

I’ll leave you with a lovely poem, collectively written by the employees from the WPS Institute after their foraging excursion:

Foraging with the Goddess of the Hunt

Achy back old man knees

Stung and soothed by plants.

The old hickory bark boiled to a syrupy end.

Then the mustard greens invade—

Funny textures and bright smells,

Abundance.

Our table is set.

Dandelions are getting a second chance.
