September Events: Group Walks, Tastings & Wild Food Picnic

Fall is here! School is back in session. The sun is setting an hour earlier. And night time temperatures have dropped by double digits, signifying the beginning of a new foraging season. September is a true bounty of fantastic wild foods.

Along the coast beach plums and rose hips are ripening while wild mustard seeds are ready to be plucked. In the hedges and river banks wild grapes intoxicate the air with their sweet scent. Open fields offer crab apples, pears and pin cherries. And in the woods beefsteak polypore, cauliflower fungi (pictured left) and honey mushrooms beckon.

At this month’s tasting in Lynn, I will be featuring some of my favorite foraged jams and jellies, along with a variety of shrub drinks. My wild food picnic in Waltham is sure to be a memorable one with a medley of mushroom-centric dishes including pickled Chicken of the Woods, wild mushroom soup and everyone’s favorite – mushroom jerky! Come out and experience all that September has to offer.
