August Foraging Walks: Upcoming Group Events & Picnic

July has been a real scorcher! Between the insane heat waves and thick, stifling humidity the last place I have wanted to be is sitting at my computer, using my brain. While today is only 91 degrees out, I figured I better make hay and try to get some work done!
It’s been a whirlwind these past few weeks, from family trips and holidays, to foraging with a delightful food critic/author (more on all these things in my next blog!) and selling out all of my July public events, I feel wonderfully exhausted.
These hot temperatures have encouraged many fungi and flora to burst forth, from the coast to the forest. Off of Rye Beach, the stripers have been feasting on a giant school of poagies while the rocky shores bloom with wild mustard flowers and queen anne’s lace (wild carrots).
Further inland, raspberries, blueberries, bilberries, huckleberries and currants are at prime harvesting along the field edges. The first green nuts of the season including black walnut and hickory are available. Chicken of the woods, chanterelles, black trumpets and milky caps are beginning to carpet the forest floor with each rain. And, ornamental flowers like day lily and hosta offer many options for the hot and thrifty forager – from raw salad toppers and garnishes to quick pickles, sodas and stuffed-with-cheese delights.
August is fast approaching, with that in mind I wanted to be sure to share my public event schedule with my favorite foraging readers/subscribers so you do not miss out!
