September Public Foraging Walks & Wild Food Picnic

August has come and gone in the blink of an eye. The intense heat and humidity that kicked off the month has given way to cooler temperatures and thunderstorms – a perfect combination for fall fungi hunting.

While summer mushrooms like chanterelles and black trumpets sputtered out due to dryness, the past two weeks have seen huge blooms of beautiful and delicious boletes from Kings and summer ceps (Porcini) to bicolors and painted sullius. My foraging basket has been chalked full of tasty varieties perfect for soups, sautees, pastas and more.

At last week’s sold out forage & wild food picnic, our group was lucky enough to find one of my favorite mushrooms, the somewhat elusive cauliflower mushroom (pictured left). It was a surprising sight, as they typically don’t come out until September when night time temperatures drop below 60 degrees. Better still, we harvested 6 that were in absolutely prime condition, plenty for everyone to take some home with them to enjoy!

Maitakes/hen of the woods will not be very far behind, followed closely by beefsteaks, hericium/lion’s mane, lobster mushrooms and winter chanterelles.

September is the perfect time to get back out into the woods and explore!
