October Foraging Events – From Mushroom Walks & Drink Tastings to Wild Food Picnics

It’s officially fall my friends – harvest time for farmers, squirrels and foragers alike. From fruits and nuts to fungi and herbs, a wide variety of delicious wild edibles are prime for picking right now.
Along the coast beach plums, rose hips and bay leaves beckon. In the fields spice bush, sumac, crab apples, persimmons and pears are at their peak. Around the house planted ornamental trees like Kousa dogwood offer fine fruits. And in the woods a multitude of nut bearing trees – beech, hickories, walnuts, hazelnuts – drop tasty treats.
Cooler night time temperatures have ushered in the fall crop of mushrooms as well. The first maitake/hen of the woods, hericium/lion’s mane, matsutake, hedgehogs and lobster mushrooms have all made their seasonal debuts over the past weeks.
In the kitchen syrups, jams, jellies and soups swirl all in preparation for my upcoming public and private events, picnics and tastings. On the wild food picnic menu this month is a medley of magnificent mushrooms – maitake noodles, chicken of the woods soup and beefsteak duxelles gravy.
Autumn olive shrub, sweet fern and sumac wild soda, beach rose hip cordial and my famous spruce tip nocino will all be featured at the upcoming wild drink tastings.
I can’t wait to share my newest creations with you and enjoy the beauty of fall!
