July Foraging Events: Group Walks & Tastings

My hands have been permanently stained all week, alternating between bright yellow from the pollen coated elderflowers in full bloom to deep purple from ripe, juicy mulberries. And, my cupboards have reached maximum capacity, with over 200 jars of canned jams, jellies, sauerkrauts and pickled delights.
While most people in the city are glued to their televisions, watching the World Cup (or the hordes of festive Scots who have seemingly taken over the state with their unbridled enthusiasm and kilts), I’ve been enjoying the quiet calm of the woods.
At this past week’s forages, we finally encountered the season’s first summer fungi – Berkeley’s Polypore and Chicken of the Woods, two of my favorites! As July approaches, mushrooms will begin fruiting more frequently and offer numerous varieties including Chanterelles, Milky Caps, Boletes and Black Trumpets.
There are still a few spots left for this Sunday’s coastal forage in New Hampshire, so come on out and enjoy a beautiful day at the beach!
Soon, immature black walnuts will be ready for harvesting, perfect for a variety of deliciously unique liqueur and syrup concoctions. Join me in Haverhill on July 12 to forage black walnuts and summer mushrooms, then hang out after for a cocktail and mocktail tasting where we will discuss how to make your own Nocino and Vin de Noix.
The end of July welcomes black raspberries and blueberries, warmed from the sun and extra sweet when plucked fresh. Although I will not be holding a forage and picnic in July due to private bookings, there are still plenty of tickets left for June’s forage and picnic on the 27th. The menu will feature elderflower, mulberries, mushrooms and a wide variety of tasty salt marsh succulents.
With summer almost here, it’s a wonderful time to head out and experience all that nature has to offer!
